13th November 2009 - 2010 Job Loss Programme

On Tuesday, November 10th the Lloyds Banking Group announced that 5,000 job losses are planned in Group Operations, Insurance Division and the Mortgage Operations business in 2010.

This brings the total job loss announcements since HBOS was taken over on January 19th 2009 (just nine long months ago) to over 15,000. And this is without the effect of the planned sale of Intelligent Finance and parts of the former Lloyds TSB branch network as announced last week.

As some of the changes announced will not take place until the second half of 2010, the Union is less than happy that some uncertainties will remain despite what the Bank has said about clarity and that we still do not have the whole 2010 picture for all employees in the Lloyds Banking Group.

Commenting on the announcements, Accord’s General Secretary, Ged Nichols, said:

“This announcement is terrible news for the employees who are affected and their families. We always recognised that some job losses were inevitable as Lloyds TSB integrated HBOS operations but the scale of the changes announced today will leave many staff in shock.

Some of those who are affected will have a long wait before anything definite happens and they may find the uncertainty very difficult to cope with.

Accord believes that it is vitally important that LBG works closely with the union to ensure that staff are properly supported through the changes and the process is managed without resorting to compulsory redundancies.

Accord will be providing full support to every member affected by today’s announcement.”

More information on the planned changes has been provided to the staff who are impacted by the Bank. However, for some of the initiatives, the details are still somewhat sketchy.

Accord’s priority is to contact the members who are impacted to see how we can best support them and take their issues and concerns forward.
