25th August 2009 - Over 200 jobs to go in review of General Insurance

Members in the General Insurance business, part of the Insurance Division, have been briefed on changes that will lead to some 206 roles being cut.

Following the bringing together of the two heritage businesses, the Bank is now seeking to remove duplication in support areas.  The details of the changes are as follows:

33

Sales & Marketing – Direct & Corporate Partnerships

43

Sales & Marketing – Retail Banking Partnerships

47

It is unclear exactly how these changes will impact on each site, as some of the roles that are remaining may be undertaken on any of a number of sites; however the main impacts for HBOS staff are in Lovell Park, Copley, Nottingham and Shannon.

Commenting, Ged Nichols, General Secretary of Accord, said:

Today’s announcement is clearly bad news for those affected. We expect that around half of the job losses will be at HBOS operations at Lovell Park in Leeds and Copley near Halifax.

However Accord believes that compulsory redundancies are not inevitable. We believe that the Bank should work with Accord and other unions to find redeployment opportunities elsewhere in the Bank and that any redundancies should be voluntary.

Accord will be offering guidance and support to the members affected by today’s announcement, with union officers visiting the affected workplaces this week.”

In view of the locations and the size of the in scope population (there are 710 staff impacted of which 435 are heritage HBOS and 213 are Accord members) we are hopeful that the reductions can be achieved via redeployment and voluntary means.

Accord will be in touch with every individual member who is impacted to offer advice, support and guidance.  Your local reps will be available to help with straightforward queries alternatively our officials will be available to talk to members on site as required.

A copy of a briefing note that has been circulated to the affected members by local representatives is available here
